We’ve all got them – that bowl full of corks from your favorite wines. I know I certainly do! There’s a pile of corks in a huge vase in the dining room just waiting for the perfect easy project to use them. I think I found it with this DIY cork memo board.

You’ll need:

  • corks
  • a frame and it’s backer board (any size)
  • hot glue gun
  • push pins

In fact, you probably already have most of these around the house.

For this project, you’ll need around 60 corks. That sounds like a lot of parties!! It takes time to gather that many corks. I’ve had mine for a couple of years, tossed into a glass vase like the one in the picture above. They are so warm and inviting looking in the dining room.

Look for picture frames at yard sales and thrift shops. This particular one isn’t old, but the shape was exactly what I was looking for. I took out the owl print and painted the frame in Graphite Chalk Paint.

The only difficult thing (and I use that word loosely) is laying out the corks. You can use any design, but I chose something simple.

Start by running a row of corks all the way around the inside edge of the frame. Then start building blocks of corks. You’ll probably notice that the corks are a variety of sizes. Work in blocks of the same size.

Using hot glue, secure the corks into place by glueing the backs and the sides of the corks. This way they are nice and secure in the frame.

Let the glue cool, then add some colourful push pins to add your memos. Hang it in a convenient place so that the whole family can see it.

You could easily turn this memo board into a great tray by adding a couple of handles on each end. Or make a smaller version and use it as a hot plate.

The next time you want to toss that cork out in the garbage, think of the possibilities instead. 🙂
